"There comes a time to turn Mother's picture to the wall and get out!"

Today on The Huffington Post, Nathan Gardels writes a blog about de Gaulle having nice words to say about retreat. Oh, Nathan! Where to begin? Suffice it to say, that trick never works.
.
The quote used for the title of this post is spoken by craggy, manly Brad Dexter to kinda androgynous but still manly Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven, as manly a film as ever produced in the 20th Century, that lovely bygone era when we were the good guys.
What kind of movies are being made now? "Say, everybody! I have an idea! Let's stick around and get slaughtered! It'll be fun!!" Big help.
.
We need examples of successful strategic withdrawal to be part of the national debate now. Given the overall mood of the country, it probably makes sense if the successful retreaters spoke English.
.
Our British pals at Dunkirk beat a hasty retreat. They were on the winning side in the end.
.
Douglas MacArthur backed up like a fiddler crab when faced with a bad position in the Philippines. That worked out okay.
.
Even America in Vietnam; that is considered a battle of the Cold War, and who won the Cold War? No, not Ronald Reagan; the U. S. of A., that's who!
.
So join with me, everybody! Retreat isn't defeat; sometimes, it's what grownups do.
