My never humble opinion on the Oscars

I may just be getting too old. I've seen about a new movie a month at a theater for the last three years, and I don't expect that average to go up any time soon.

I've seen a few more movies this year, but I also walked out on two. I've already stated my opinion that watching Slumdog Millionaire is a trial to be endured and Heath Ledger isn't as interesting as Cesar Romero in his interpretation of The Joker.

If this is what wins Oscars, movies are going to get worse. If things have gotten so bad that they are giving special Oscars to Jerry Lewis, things will get much, much worse before they get better.

What do you think?

Is it just me, or was the stage itself incredibly dark this year? And was its resemblance to the set of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" any sort of accident? I don't think so.

Ouch. It's official, you've turned into an old grouch.

I watched to see Hugh Jackman in a tux- as for the rest, well, I think they did make some good choices. Harvey Milk, Slumdog and The Reader are good movies. They aren't the kinds of movies that I go watch but they are well acted. It could have been worse.
Plus Jackman in a tux. What more can a woman ask for?

I did not watch one minute of the Oscars.

As for my movie going - it is rare and inconsistent, although I have gone more lately.

I recall that you did not like Slumdog but I went last week and (*eyes cast downward*) did really like it a lot. I hope this doesn't mean that you will break up with me now.

OH WAIT! Even if Dr. Monkey calls you a grouch (now there is an example of the pot calling the kettle noir, no?)I disagree. You are but an honest man. And an honest man who sees movies and writes about them at times.

On to my other opinions... Heath Ledger? I thought that movie was awful myself, but that kind of movie is so not my thing.

I'm glad that Sean Penn went- I thought that he was great as Harvey Milk.

At the end of the day though, I am pretty ambivalent about awards and award shows in general.

Abu - the movie is about the Indian version of Millionaire. The game is played in many countries.

To all who liked Slumdog, I know my opinion is in the minority, though I have met others who agree with me. The murder of the mom, the torture, a kid diving into a pool of shit, burning the eyes out of children, all this stuff and more made the movie difficult for me to enjoy.

I'm used to being in the minority. I came out of E.T. with an overwhelming desire to smack Steven Spielberg upside the head.

If I had known you back in 1982 you and I could have smacked Steven at the same time.

I hear you. Differences of opinion are not cause for concern. That is unless you profess your dying love for Ann Coulter or something. Even then I would still love you, but maybe my level of respect would diminish!
