Our cat Tiger Woods is the same way. We've started nicknaming him Tiger Grandin after the autistic Temple Grandin who feels more comfortable in small, confined spaces.
I don't know if it's true for cats in the wild - so few lion sized recycling bins are found on the savannahs - but for domestic cats, it's pretty close to true across the entire species.
